Choosing what runs the shop

ServiceTitan alternatives for small commercial HVAC shops

ServiceTitan describes its commercial platform as built for large, multi-trade, multi-location contractors. A smaller commercial service shop can compare BuildOps, ServiceTrade, ServiceBox, FieldBoss, Jobber, Housecall Pro and BoltWright, then run the same trial in each.

We make BoltWright, one of the alternatives below, so weigh our take accordingly. What we say about every other vendor comes from their own public pages, checked October 16, 2026, and the sources are listed at the end.

The short answer

ServiceTitan describes its commercial platform as built for large field teams, multiple trades and multi-location operations, and it gives prices on request. If you want a simpler setup, a price you can see up front, or a field app built around the equipment on your customers’ buildings, compare these: BuildOps, ServiceTrade and ServiceBox, which are built for commercial service; FieldBoss, an ERP on Microsoft Dynamics 365; Jobber and Housecall Pro, lighter systems that publish their prices and serve many residential shops; and BoltWright, where the crew’s notes become reports the office reviews. Run the same maintenance visit and service call through two or three of them before deciding.

Who ServiceTitan suits

ServiceTitan sells to residential and commercial contractors. Its commercial service page calls it “the end-to-end platform powering commercial service contractors” and says it supports “large field teams, multiple trades, and multi-location operations.” The same page lists model and serial number scanning from the phone, a Findings feature for turning what techs find into more work, a customer portal where customers can see their equipment data, and Field Assistant, an AI assistant for technicians.

Its pricing page lists three packages, Starter, Essentials and The Works, each with Request Pricing in place of a number. The request form asks how many technicians you have and whether you have a full-time office employee. The page highlights call booking, call recording, ad-spend tracking, payroll and memberships, and promises to “deliver an amazing homeowner experience.”

If ServiceTitan already runs your shop well, there may be no reason to move. Changing systems takes the office’s time and attention, and a setup your people know has real value.

When a smaller commercial shop looks elsewhere

  • You want to see the price first. ServiceTitan, BuildOps and ServiceTrade quote after a conversation. Jobber, Housecall Pro, ServiceBox and BoltWright publish plan prices, and FieldBoss publishes starting prices.
  • The package leans residential. The pricing page leads with call recording, ad-spend tracking, memberships and a homeowner experience. A shop that maintains rooftop units for property managers may care more about agreements, equipment history and getting repairs quoted. Ask which package covers those, and what you’d be paying for that you won’t use.
  • Your techs work where there’s no signal. ServiceTitan’s Field Mobile App FAQ says notes, photos, forms, equipment and closing out a job work offline, and that service location history isn’t available offline. If your techs need the last visit’s history in a basement mechanical room, test that specifically.
  • The office is one or two people. Somebody has to set up and look after whatever you choose. Ask each vendor who does the setup, how long it takes, and how much looking after it needs once you’re live.

BoltWright is newer and much smaller than the other companies on this list. Ask every vendor, us included, who answers when something goes wrong and how quickly. Other systems often named alongside these include FieldEdge, Simpro, FieldPulse and Service Fusion. They aren’t covered here, and the same trial works for them.

One trial for every vendor

Bring the same two jobs to every demo: a maintenance visit across several rooftop units, and a service call that ends with a repair the customer still has to approve. Ask each vendor to walk through them on screen.

  1. Get the price for your actual shop in writing: technicians, office users, modules, implementation, data migration and what changes at renewal.
  2. From the phone, open a site with several units and find the right RTU’s last visit. Then switch on airplane mode, record a reading, a photo and a voice note, close and reopen the app, reconnect, and check the office sees each item on the right unit.
  3. Follow the repair from the finding to the quote, the customer’s approval and the return visit on the schedule.
  4. Read the report the property manager would get. Who reviews it, and what stops a wrong reading from going out?
  5. Open the maintenance agreement. Which visits are due next, and how is included maintenance kept apart from billable extras on the invoice?
  6. Name your accounting system and edition, and ask which way records sync.
  7. Get a sample export of customers, sites, equipment and job history before you sign.

The commercial software comparison uses the same script across more vendors, and the small-shop guide helps split the trial between the owner, the office and the crew. If you’re in Canada, the Canadian software guide covers currency, sales tax and QuickBooks Canada.

If you’re already on ServiceTitan

Check your contract’s end date and notice terms first. Ask ServiceTitan for a sample export of the records you’d need to keep, especially equipment and job history, and ask the receiving vendor to import that sample while you watch. The switching checklist covers the rest of the move. If you come to BoltWright with time left on another system’s contract, we credit up to six months of the remaining term; the details are on the pricing page.
