AAON · model number decoder

AAON RN Series

AAON's configurable RN rooftop line, built to order from a long feature string. The first 25 characters tell you the size, cabinet, voltage, compressor and condenser type, cooling staging and heat type.

Packaged rooftop unit, heat pump or outdoor air unit · 6–70 tons · R-454B

Decoded against AAON’s published nomenclature. Characters we can’t match are flagged, not guessed. What you type stays in this tab.

What this page doesn’t cover

  • Decodes the first 25 characters of the current R-454B RN feature string (for example RNA-010-A-A-3-FAA02-CA1B0): base model, Model Option A (cooling) and Model Option B (heating). The rest of the string (after the colon: controls, economizer, filters, energy recovery and other features) is not decoded here; check it against AAON's IOM.
  • AAON's own sample string in the IOM uses a compressor code (C) that is not in the current compressor list, so our example is assembled from listed codes rather than copied.
  • The cabinet series letters (position 9) come from the December 2025 edition of the IOM; the June 2026 Rev B edition still shows the position but drops its legend. The two editions overlap for 11–15-ton units (B and C cabinets).
  • Older R-410A RN units use a different model layout (for example RN-025-3-0-...). This decoder does not read those strings.
  • Cooling staging codes A, B and C mean different compressor arrangements at different sizes; AAON's IOM has the size-by-size list. Codes N and Q (DX air handler refrigeration circuits) are left out because the current IOM's layout garbles them.
  • Filters are the standard unit filters (option 0, 2 in. pleated MERV 8) without return-air bypass. Return-air bypass, 4 in. racks, pre-filters and energy recovery change the count and size. 11 and 13-ton units are left blank because AAON lists them under both the B and C cabinet tables; count the rack.
  • AAON does not publish a serial-number date format in the IOM, so there is no serial decoder.

Decoded it on the roof?
Keep it with the unit.

BoltWright keeps every rooftop’s model, serial, history and open findings with the building, so the next tech starts with what the last one knew. Capture works without reception.
